Gear Post: Lowepro Fastpack 350

A few months ago I got a Lowepro Fastpack 350 to lug around my camera gear and laptop. I must say I'm very happy with this pack. I carries a ton of gear quite well, fits under airline seats, and fits my big lenses with the camera body attached. Here's a couple photos showing basic usage...

as you can see, the lower portion of the pace is quite roomy. Right now (today, not when the pictures above were taken) the top lens divider contains my Sigma 50-500mm (BIGMA!) (as it does in the picture above, the bottom contains my new Tamron AF 70-200mm f/2.8, and the middle area is holding a PENTAX DA 10-17mm Fish-Eye, and a Sigma 24-60mm f/2.8 EX DG. Two of those are pretty big lenses, and even those will fit in place with the camera attached.

Some folks have complained at the lack of a dedicated tripod mount, but I've found several different means for attaching a pod, the most simple being cinching it under the flap where my jacket is clipped in the second pic. The other major complaint I've heard, and somewhat agree with is that Lowepro didn't include their great built-in rain cover which many of their packs have. I've solved this with a $20 super-light backpack rain cover.

Overall I'd highly recommend this pack or the smaller version for anyone who needs to carry a bunch of camera gear around while still leaving room for a sweater, water, lunch and a bunch of accessories.

where did you buy the raincover from?

he rain cover I've got is the Sea to Summit SN240 - Size Medium which according to their sizing chart is for a larger pack than the Fastpack 350, but it works just fine as the cinchable elastic draw-cord grips it tightly to the pack, and the larger size would cover items you might have strapped to the exterior of the pack and would allow it to work on a larger pack someday too (plus I think the shop I bought mine from didn't have the next size down, so I couldn't try it ;-) I think the medium is a good size though). I bought it at a local shop, but if you can't find one at a local shop, amazon's got 'em... http://amzn.to/l543xB
